Described by Time Out magazine as a Mozambican "nu-soul diva" and blessed with a voice that has been likened to “a less raspy Macy Gray, or even the dulcet jazz tones of Erykah Badu” (Wax), Maiuko has developed a song writing skill with a little inspiration from the likes of Billie Holiday, Hugh Masekela, Bjork and Massive Attack. She writes and sings about the experiences of her journey through life. Her music embraces tribal feels laced with melancholic South African jazz driven by lo-fi old soul and trip-hop grooves.

Maiuko, the voice of Mozambique at the Lost Theatre on Monday 31 Oct. (LIFEM-2011)

Maiuko is far from the assumed traditional African music act, but don’t get me wrong, she is so much more, this is real music ,fearlessly expressed and possibly a little ahead of our time.

"Maiuko, Lake Maiuko? Who is she, what is she? How to describe her music? Afro-jazz? Nu-soul? Afro-fado? Luso-zouk? Blues?

To be honest, I don’t really much care! Call it what you will! All I know is that it’s great music, and it makes me feel good!"
